A box culvert is a rectangular precast concrete unit; a pipe culvert is round. The rectangular shape is what makes a box culvert useful where cover depth is limited, because it moves the same volume of water in a shallower trench than the equivalent pipe. Boxes also give a flat invert, which suits pedestrian and stock underpasses and service tunnels. Round pipe culverts remain the cheaper option for straightforward drainage runs where there is plenty of depth to work with.
